Bathtub Buying Guide for Contractors: Types, Materials & Wholesale Sourcing

1. The Four Bathtub Types — and When to Use Each

Freestanding

  • What: Standalone tub with finished exterior, no surround needed
  • Installation: Place on finished floor, connect drain and fill — simplest install
  • Weight: 40–120 kg (stone resin models heaviest)
  • Price (wholesale): $150–600
  • Best for: Hotels, luxury residential, master bathrooms — aesthetic centerpiece
  • Watch out: Floor loading — a stone resin freestanding tub filled with water can exceed 300 kg
  • Lead time: 30–45 days (custom colors 50–70 days)

Drop-In / Alcove

  • What: Rimmed tub that drops into a deck or three-wall alcove
  • Installation: Requires tiled surround or prefab alcove structure
  • Weight: 20–50 kg (acrylic) or 60–100 kg (cast iron)
  • Price (wholesale): $80–250
  • Best for: Apartment projects, budget hotels, multi-unit developments
  • Watch out: Precise rough-in dimensions critical — standard alcove width is 60″ (1524 mm)
  • Lead time: 20–30 days

Whirlpool / Jetted

  • What: Acrylic or stone resin tub with built-in pump and jets
  • Installation: Requires dedicated electrical circuit (GFCI protected) + access panel for pump service
  • Weight: 35–70 kg (dry), + water weight
  • Price (wholesale): $250–800
  • Best for: Upscale hotels, spa bathrooms, luxury apartments
  • Watch out: Pump noise (spec quiet-rated pumps ≤45 dB), bacteria growth in pipes (spec self-cleaning/sanitizing jets)
  • Lead time: 40–60 days

Stone Resin / Solid Surface

  • What: Cast stone or engineered mineral composite, seamless finish
  • Installation: Heavy — usually 3–4 person lift, floor reinforcement often needed
  • Weight: 80–150 kg
  • Price (wholesale): $300–900
  • Best for: High-end hospitality, luxury residential, projects where tactile quality matters
  • Watch out: Surface scratches cannot be buffed out like acrylic — needs protective wrapping during construction
  • Lead time: 35–55 days

2. Material Comparison: What You’re Actually Paying For

Bathtub Acrylic vs Stone Resin Material Cross-section
MaterialWeight (kg)DurabilityRepairPrice IndexBest For
Acrylic20–40MediumPolish out scratches1.0x (base)Apartments, budget
Fiberglass15–25LowReplace only0.7xLowest budget
Cast Iron60–120ExcellentRefinish enamel2.0xCommercial, heavy use
Stone Resin80–150ExcellentProfessional resurface2.5–3.5xHospitality, luxury
Steel30–50GoodEnamel repair1.2xMid-range, weight-sensitive

Contractor’s Take: Acrylic is the workhorse for volume projects — light, durable enough, easy to install, and polishable. Stone resin is where hotel developers get their “luxury feel” — but budget for structural reinforcement and protective wrapping.

Cast iron is nostalgic but rarely the right choice for new construction: it takes 2x as long to heat the water, requires extra floor support, and installation labor is 3x that of acrylic.

3. The Two Most Common Installation Mistakes

Bathtub Drain Rough-in and Floor Reinforcement Diagram

1) Floor reinforcement ignored

A 150 kg stone resin tub + 200 L of water + a person = 350+ kg concentrated on four small feet. Many contractors assume standard joist spacing handles this — it doesn’t. Always confirm with a structural engineer for any tub over 80 kg.

2) Drain access not planned

Whirlpool tubs need pump access. Drop-in tubs need overflow drain access from below. If you tile over the access panel or place the tub before plumbing is roughed-in, you’re cutting tile later. Cost of a retrofit access panel: $200–400 + tile matching.

  1. Floor loading confirmed for tub weight + water + person
  2. Electrical rough-in for whirlpool (GFCI 15A dedicated)
  3. Drain and overflow rough-in positioned correctly
  4. Access panel planned for pump/plumbing service
  5. Door width confirmed — can the tub physically fit through?

4. Price Benchmarking (Wholesale, Q3 2026)

Per-unit pricing FOB China (20′ container, 50+ units, standard white):

TypeAcrylicStone ResinWhirlpool (Acrylic)Cast Iron
Freestanding$180–350$350–600$400–700$300–500
Drop-In/Alcove$80–180$250–450$250–500$200–400
Whirlpool$250–500$400–800Built-in$350–600

Not included: Faucets and trim ($20–80 per set), drain kit ($5–15), freight ($1,500–3,500 per container depending on destination), custom color ($25–50 per unit).

Volume leverage: 100+ units = 8–12% discount. 300+ units = negotiate direct factory pricing.

5. What Experienced Contractors Ask Suppliers

“Can I see your packing standard?” — Bathtubs have a 3–5% breakage rate in transit with standard packing. Suppliers who use reinforced wooden crates with foam corner blocks bring this below 0.5%.

“What’s your lead time variance?” — The supplier who says 35 days and delivers in 38 is better than the one who says 25 and delivers in 42. Ask for last 3 shipment actuals.

“Do you have in-country stock?” — For Middle East and Africa projects, suppliers with UAE or Saudi warehouse stock can cut lead time from 40 days to 7 days. Premium of 10–15% but worth it for time-sensitive projects.

“What’s your warranty on pump/motor units?” — Whirlpool pumps should carry minimum 2-year warranty on the motor, 5 years on the tub body. If they bundle into a single 1-year warranty, that’s a red flag.

6. Decision Matrix for Contractor Projects

Bathtub Decision Matrix Budget Mid-range Luxury

7. Red Flags When Vetting Bathtub Suppliers

  1. Weight listed is not net dry weight — Some suppliers list shipping weight (including crate) as product weight. Clarify.
  2. No ISO 9001 — Bathtub manufacturing requires consistent quality control. Without ISO 9001, you’re gambling on QC.
  3. Alcove dimensions don’t account for flanges — The rough-in opening should be 1/2″ larger than the listed tub width to account for installation flanges.
  4. Finishing photos only in showroom lighting — Ask for photos in natural daylight and under warm bathroom lighting. Gloss can hide minor surface defects.
  5. Sample lead time > 15 days — If they can’t ship a sample quickly, their production lead times are likely unreliable too.

8. Summary Checklist for Your RFQ

  1. Type confirmed — Freestanding, drop-in, or whirlpool?
  2. Material selected — Acrylic, stone resin, or other?
  3. Dimensions checked — Length (standard: 60″/67″/71″), width, depth
  4. Weight and floor loading — Confirmed with structural engineer for tubs > 80 kg
  5. Installation access — Door clearance, drain access, electrical rough-in
  6. Packing standard — Reinforced crate? Foam blocks? Breakage rate?
  7. Lead time and variance — Ask for last 3 shipment records
  8. Warranty — Minimum 5 years body, 2 years pump (whirlpool)
  9. Sample inspection — Request 2 units from production line
  10. Port of destination — FOB China + shipping cost confirmed to port

Ordering bathtubs for a project is rarely a one-size-fits-all decision. Match the type and material to the project’s actual use case — not the architect’s brand preference or the supplier’s margin structure — and you’ll have a bathroom that performs for years.
